Traditional Maori Beliefs - Pouroto Ngaropo Speech

Pouroto Ngaropo, MNZM, JP, Leader, Tohunga, Historian. Te Tawera Hapu, Iramoko Marae. Ngati Awa ki te Te Awa O Te Atua.

Pouroto Ngaropo, is someone who is well versed in the Maori tradition. In his speech, he pointed to some similarities in the Islamic concept of God and traditional Maori beliefs. This is in keeping with the fitrah (innate nature of mankind to believe in God) and the Islamic belief that all nations were taught to worship one God by various messengers sent to their people, but over time the message got changed. The final messenger prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h was sent by God (Allah) to bring the people back to the worship of the one true God.

"We have sent you ˹O Prophet˺ only as a deliverer of good news and a warner to all of humanity, but most people do not know." Quran 34:28
